Martin Guptill smashes fastest 50 for Kiwis

Martin-Guptill

CHRISTCHURCH: New Zealand opening batsman Martin Guptill has registered New Zealand’s fastest fifty runs record in his name after he scored 50 off 17 balls only but he missed world’s fastest 50 record by just one ball.

McCullum, who did not partner Guptill at the top of the innings due to a back injury, sat back and enjoyed the assault.

“I thought he was going to get the world record as well. It was a superb innings, you can’t describe that. You witness once or twice in your life,” he said.

“I know he struck the ball cleanly the other day (when making 79 on Boxing Day) but jeez he struck it even better today and he did it with such composure.

“Very few players in the world can play like that. He’s had a stellar year and he’s a huge player for us.”

In second ODI game against Sri Lanka Guptill smashed four sixes and five fours in 50 runs while unbeaten on 93 not out off 30 balls.

Guptill hammered 9 fours and 8 sixes in his remarkable innings which resulted in Sri Lanka’s loss by ten wickets.

The world’s fastest fifty record is currently held by South Africa’s AB de Villiers who scored 50 runs off 16 balls only.
