Restless Legs Syndrome (RLS) is basically a neurological disorder which involves throbbing, pulling, creeping or some other unpleasant sensations in legs and an uncontrollable, overwhelming impulse to move them.

Symptoms occur primarily at night when a person is relaxing or at rest and can increase in severity during the night. Moving the legs relieves the discomfort, the sensations range in severity from uncomfortable to irritating to painful.

As far as the causes are concerned, they are many. Some causes include a deficiency of iron, uncontrolled diabetes or even Parkinson’s. Experts say that if these ailments are treated in time, symptoms of RLS can be improved. While in most patients RLS causes no significant problems, in very severe cases, it can actually hamper one’s day-to-day activities.

If you suffer from RLS, here are a few tips that can help,

– Take a look at your diet, it has a lot to do with the state of your health. If you drink several cups of coffee a day, one of the first things you need to do is to lower your caffeine consumption. You also need to curb your alcohol and smoking, both are said to make symptoms of RLS much worse. And the last thing you need to do is indulge in something that will aggravate your problem.

– Do you sleep and wake up at the same time every day? If you don’t then it is time to start following a schedule and sticking to it. Once your body is used to a sleeping pattern, your symptoms will ease and cause lesser discomfort. Sleep and wake up at the same time every day as much as you can.

– Stay being more active. Studies say that a sedentary lifestyle can worsen symptoms. But don’t overdo it either because over-exercising can worsen your symptoms.

– When the discomfort it too much, apply an ice pack or a heat compress on your legs.

– Increase your iron intake, have lots of green, leafy vegetables.
