BEIJING: A 21-year-old mixed martial arts fighter from China has died of heart attack, believed to have been caused by weight cutting, TheNewsTribe learnt from Mail Online
Yang Jian Bing died at San Juan De Dios Hospital in Pasay, Philippines, after a sudden collapse on December 10.
The flyweight was due to compete in ONE Championships’ Spirit of Champions event in Manila on December 11 – the day he passed away.
In a statement, ONE Championship said his death was caused by cardiopulmonary failure, but ‘formal hospital medical reports and procedures are still being carried out’.
CEO of ONE Championship, Victor Cui said: ‘There is nothing more profoundly tragic and sad than when a member of the ONE Championship family, current or past, passes away.
‘Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and loved ones of Yang Jian Bing.
‘We will work closely with the family and offer all the support they need in any way we can during this very difficult time.’
Some MMA fighters are among the sportsmen and women who adopt dangerous methods to reduce their weight before a bout.
