KARACHI: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) MPA, Khurram Sher Zaman on Tuesday submitted a resolution in Sindh Assembly secretariat demanding 4-month extension in Rangers policing powers to curb crime, corruption and terrorism.
“Sindh police have failed whereas Rangers have played a vital role in maintaining peace and improve law and order situation in Karachi; therefore, not only PTI but citizens of Karachi are demanding extension in Rangers powers,” the PTI lawmaker spoke to media persons at Sindh Assembly.
He called upon all political parties to support the resolution to empower Rangers against “extortionists, terrorists, target-killers and others criminal elements” of Karachi.
On the other hand, a summary seeking extension in special policing powers to Sindh Rangers is still awaiting the signature of Sindh Chief Minister Qaim Ali Shah despite the lapse of two days.
Sources said CM is waiting for a go-ahead from Dubai to sign the requisition summary.
Veteran PPP leader and advisor to CM for information Moula Bux Chandio asserts the powers of the Rangers will be extended soon.
However, Nisar Khuhro, another senior PPP leader, says the powers would be granted by Sindh Assembly, and not CM.
In July this year, the Sindh government granted paramilitary force the special powers to detain suspects for 90 days with an aim to restore law and order in the megacity. This 120-day extension came to its close two days ago at midnight between Saturday and Sunday.
Shorn of its powers and legal cover, the paramilitary force has been skirting any major raid for two days now.
