ISLAMABAD: Afghanistan’s CEO Abdullah Abdullah on Monday confirmed the visit of President Ashraf Ghani to Islamabad where he will attend the ‘Heart of Asia’ conference starting from Wednesday.

Speaking at his weekly Council of Ministers meeting, Abdullah said that the Afghan government is hopeful that the summit will bring forward significant results.

Earlier, an Afghan security team arrived in Islamabad on Sunday to prepare the ground for a possible visit of President Ashraf Ghani to Pakistan.

Prime Minister (PM) Nawaz Sharif had met President Ghani on the sidelines of the UN Climate Change Conference in Paris last week and invited the Afghan leader to the conference.

An 11-member Afghan team, including deputy chief of presidential protocol Bilal Ahmadzai, discussed arrangements for Ghani’s visit with Pakistani officials at the foreign ministry.

On the other hand, Indian External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj will also visit Pakistan on Tuesday, as stated by the External Affairs Ministry Spokesperson Vikas Swarup on his twitter account.

Sushma Swaraj’s Pakistan visit takes place after the National Security Advisers of India and Pakistan met in Thai capital Bangkok on Sunday and “agreed to carry forward the constructive engagement”.

During her visit, the Indian FM will also call on PM Nawaz Sharif and meet his Adviser on Foreign Affairs Sartaj Aziz on the sidelines of the Afghan conference.

Pakistan is hosting a 14-nation ministerial-level conference on December 7 and 8 to discuss regional cooperation on Afghanistan.

The ‘Heart of Asia‘ conference will be attended by representatives from Azerbaijan, China, Iran, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Tajikistan, Turkey, Turkmenistan and the UAE.
