There are 500,000 earthquakes a year across the globe,

Every year, Southern California area alone faces almost 10,000 earthquakes, most of them are not felt by people. These are detected by sensitive instruments. Furthermore, of all these earthquakes worldwide, only 100,000 can be felt and around 100 cause damage each year.

It is pertinent to mention here that the 1906 San Francisco earth quake crumbled almost 500 blocks of the city.

In Antarctica, there are ice quakes not earth quakes

The continent experienced ice quakes that occurred within the ice rather than the land. The continent’s ice cracked and exploded because of a major earthquake which happened in Maule, Chile and halfway around the world.

Seismologists say that earthquakes on one side can shake the other side.

Around 80% of the earthquakes occur in the ‘Pacific Ring of Fire

This is the geologically most active region on Earth. It circles the Pacific Ocean, touching the coasts North and South America, Japan, China and Russia. This is the reason majority of Earth’s major quakes occur here as major plate boundaries collide.

Earth has been more seismologically active in the past 15 years or so

According to some scientists, the earth has been more active over the past 15 or so years as compared to the 20-year period from the mid-1970s to mid-1990s. But scientist are not unanimous on this fact.

A city in Chile shifted 10 feet in February 2010

Earth’s bulge was shred a little by the undersea earth quake in Indian Ocean

This earthquake had a series of devastating tsunamis following it which occurred on December 26, 2004. These tsunamis hit the coasts of most landmass bordering the Indian Ocean, bringing 100-foot waves and taking lives of over 225,000 people in 11 states.

This disastrous land displacement triggered a small reduction in earth’s bulge which made the planet more round. It is pertinent to mention here that the earth’s midsection has a bulge in relation to the pole to pole measurement.
