MQM says workers went to India to save their lives

KARACHI: Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) Rabitta (Coordination) Committee has said that the party supporters headed to different foreign countries to save their lives following 1992 operation in Karachi, reported Sama.

Besides justifying party supporters’ decision to leave the country, MQM seeks clemency like that of announced for estranged Baloch.

“The injustices done to the MQM after the start of the state operation against the MQM on 19 June 1992 are a matter of record. Thousands of MQM workers were forced to go to different parts of the country for saving their lives. Some headed to foreign countries where they obtained asylum,” the committee said in a statement.

“The countries where the MQM workers headed include USA, Canada, UK, France, Germany, Australia, Middle East states and other countries of the world. Some went to India for saving their lives as they could not go to any other country,” MQM said.

“These MQM workers chose to go to India because they had family ties in India… They did so without informing the MQM, and this cannot be called the policy of the MQM. We have nothing to do with the training of these people who had gone to India,” the party clarified, dismissing media reports about some Indian-trained criminals’ affiliation with the party.

“MQM is a patriotic political party, and it will continue to be loyal to Pakistan without any condition… MQM was a party formed by descendants of the founders of Pakistan and it cannot even think about any plan against the country.”

The Co-ordination Committee appealed the establishment to review everything in the light of facts “by casting aside emotions and use of force….”

“Just as clemency is being announced for the estranged Baloch people who are highly praiseworthy, the establishment should also heal the wounds of Muhajirs by forgetting past bitterness… Such a step would be in the interest of the nation and the country, and the MQM will extend its fullest support to it,” the statement said.
