ISLAMABAD: Finance Minister Ishaq Dar Thursday contacted JUI-F Chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman and discussed matters relating resignations of Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) lawmakers.
During the telephonic conversation, Dar asked Fazl to contact MQM boss Altaf Hussain as a last-ditch effort for withdrawal of the resignations.
Maulana Fazl played a mediatory role between the government and MQM after the largest political party of Karachi resigned from National Assembly, Senate and Sindh Assembly.
Earlier, MQM leader Dr Farooq Sattar said if any institution was to decide his party’s fate then let it be.
“It is up to the government how it wants to deal with the MQM lawmakers resignations. If they are bound to take advice from an ‘institution’ then they better do it,” Sattar told reporters in Karachi.
In the next breath, Sattar encouraged the government to take matters in its hands and do what it must.
His statement came a day after MQM called off its negotiations with the government.
Muttahida leaders termed the government’s non-serious approach as responsible for the collapse of negotiations, saying no redressal committee was formed despite the lapse of even 20 days.
Dr. Farooq Sattar said, “MQM is being marginalized under the garb of Karachi operation as the party’s political and welfare activities are subject to an unannounced ban.”
