Wimbledon: Sania Mirza, Martina win women’s doubles title

LONDON: Indian tennis star Sania Mirza along with her Swiss partner Martina Hingis have won first-ever women’s doubles Grand Slam title as the pair routed their opponents in the final of Wimbledon Championships in London on Monday.

The top seeded Indo-Swiss pair beat Elena Vesnina-Ekaterina Makarova 5-7, 7-6, 7-5 in the final. This was the second time Sania appeared in the women’s doubles Grand Slam final in her career, she ended runners-up at the 2011 French Open with Russian partner Elena Vesnina.

Sania is winner of three mixed doubles Grand Slam titles. She won Australian Open (2009) and French Open (2012) with compatriot Mahesh Bhupathi and the US Open with Bruno Soares last year.
