Saddam Hussein’s former spokesman Tariq Aziz died in jail

BAGHDAD – Tariq Aziz, former spokesman of Iraqi dictator, has died in the prison in Iraq.

Aziz, who was aged 79, passed away on Friday afternoon after suffering a heart attack on Thursday, Iraqi officials said.

Former foreign minister was sentenced to death after being convicted of human rights violations during Saddam’s regime.

For more than two decades, Mr Aziz was Saddam’s chief envoy to the world. Aziz had been in custody since April 24 of that year, when he surrendered to US forces at his home in Baghdad.

While talking to international media, his daughter Zainab said, “”He was just a spokesman for Saddam, and was trying to serve the country when it was in a very bad situation. If he had refused to do his job, he would have been killed like anybody else.”

According to media reports, Aziz’s son, Ziad, expressed outrage that Iraqi officials had not informed him of his father’s death, and that he had instead found out through local media reports.
