ECP orders re-polling in PK-95

PESHAWAR – The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has ordered re-polling in the PK-95, constituency of Lower Dir in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KPK), due to the absence of women voters during election of May 30 on Tuesday.

There are almost 127,096 registered voters in PK-95, out of which around 53,000 of the registered voters are women.

While declaring null and void the by-election of PK-95, ECP also announced the new election schedule.

It is to be noted that the said seat fell vacant after the appointment of Jamaat-e-Islami’s Chief, Sirajul Haq, as senator.

During the by-election held on May 30, Izazul Mulk of JI won the election, but women did not allow to participate in the by-election.

The ECP took notice of not allowing women to cast their votes in the by-election, it also maintained that it is not acceptable by any stretch of imagination to bar women from casting votes.

In 2013, documents signed by members of PTI, PPP, Awami National Party, JUI-F, PML-N and JI showed the parties were in tacit approval that women were not to vote in the General Elections in certain parts of KP.

ECP said that it is highly unconstitutional to not allow women to use their right of voting, and nullify the results of election held on May 30, and ordered re-election in the said constituency.
