Foreign Office Endorses Negotiations Between Taliban And Afghan Government

ISLAMABAD – Foreign Secretary of Pakistan Aizaz Ahmed Chaudhry says that Pakistan is in the favor of peace talks between the delegation constituted by the Afghan government and an eight membered team from Taliban’s side.

Foreign Secretary of Pakistan also stated that the stability in Afghanistan is a prerequisite to the stability in South Asia specifically and the whole world in general.

It may be added that the meeting had been arranged by a Noble Prize holder organization “Pugwash”. Analysts are of the view that this meeting would be the first step towards negotiations to eliminate the ongoing war in Afghan soil.

The vice chairman of Afghan Peace Committee Ata Ullah Din told BBC that the Afghan delegation consisted of twenty members and the meeting had been scheduled on Sunday and Monday. However the names of these members have not been told yet.

Taliban spokesman Zabeeh Ullah Mujahid has also affirmed the peace meeting with Afghan delegation while constituting an eight membered team. The team includes Sher Muhammad, Molvi Jan Muhammad, Molvi syed Rasool Haleem, Molvi Shahab ud Din Dilawar, Qari Din Muhammad Hanif, Molvi Abdul Islam and Sohail Shaheen.

Similar efforts have been done in the past for reconciliation but all went in vain. In 2013, process of negotiations between Afghan officials and Taliban committee was initiated which came out with no productive results.
