We Requested Media To Demonstrate Responsible Journalistic Behavior: Judicial Commission

ISLAMABAD: Judicial Commission meeting was headed by Commission Head Justice Nasir-ul-Mulk who complaint about the role and interference of media in the decisions of Judicial Commission.

“Media have been aired many programs related to Commission”, says Justice Nasir-ul-Mulk.

He said “the very first day we requested media to demonstrate responsible journalistic behavior”.

Judicial Commission deferred action for some days.

He warned “if media analysis will affect the Commission’s action and media will continue such type of behavior then we will start in camera discussion”.

Since 2002, the Pakistani media has become powerful and independent and the number of private television channels has grown from just three state-run channels in 2000 to 89 in 2012, according to the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority.

Most of the private media in Pakistan flourished under the President Musharraf regime.

Since the introduction of these vibrant TV channels, many major corruption cases and scams have been unveiled by journalists. Notable among them are:

The Pakistan Steel Mills Rs.26 billion scam, National Insurance Company Limited scandal, Bribery and corruption in Pakistan International Airlines which caused losses of $500 million, Embezzlement in Pakistan Railways causing massive financial losses, Hajj corruption case 2014, NATO containers’ case where 40 containers heading for ISAF in Afghanistan went missing, and Rental power projects corruption.

It also includes Ephedrine quota case, a scandal involving the son of former Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gillani to pressure officials of the Health Ministry to allocate a quota of controlled chemical ephedrine to two different pharmaceutical companies.

And then another case which made media house believe that they can hold the judiciary is Malik Riaz’s ‘Media Gate’ in which the son of Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry is said to have taken money from Malik Riaz to give favorable decisions from the Supreme Court.

But now in doing so media believe that there might be no limit of their coverage and it has now become their prime duty to sensationalize every event.

The worst examples of such type of media behavior are:

Sikander hostage in Islamabad 2013, unreasonable favoritism in 2013 general elections to political parties, irresponsible media live courage in terrorist attacks during Karachi airport attack 2014, Army Public School Attack 2014, and over exaggerated details of Imram and Reham Khan’s wedding which even included the counting the number of rice spoons Reham eaten on her Walima.

Due to height of curiosity media have to know the news first, Judicial Commission Head Justice Nasir-ul-Mulk requested media to demonstrate responsible journalistic behavior during the meetings of Judicial Commission otherwise the commission will held ‘in-camera meetings’.
