UN security council passes resolution on Yemen conflict

NEW YORK: The UN security council has passed the resolution against that impose an arms embargo on leaders of Yemen’s Houthi rebels and their key supporters – ex-president Ali Abdullah Saleh and his son.

The resolution was presented by Jordan which was passed on Tuesday after voting in which Russia didn’t participate.

The resolution is aimed at ending the Houthis’ military campaign against supporters of the embattled current president, Abed Rabbo Mansour Hadi, and the rebels’ attempt to take over the strategic Middle East country.

Saudi-led air strikes in support of Hadi and escalating fighting on the ground between the Houthis and Hadi’s supporters have pushed the Arab world’s poorest nation to the brink of collapse.

Russia has insisted on an arms embargo on all parties to the conflict – not just the Houthis and their supporters – and diplomats said on Monday that it was not clear whether Moscow will abstain or veto the resolution. The diplomats spoke on condition of anonymity because negotiations have been private.
