ICC fine Wahab, Watson over fiery exchange of words

DUBAI: International Cricket Council (ICC) has punished Pakistan pacer Wahab Riaz and Australia all rounder Shane Watson over the fiery confrontation in Friday’s World Cup quarter-final.

According to details, Wahab has been fined 50% of match fee while Watson lost 15% of match fee.

The ICC will announce on Saturday what ─ if any ─ action will be taken against them for the violation.

Riaz, during an aggressive bowling spell, peppered Watson with a series of short-pitched deliveries and sarcastically applauded, even blowing the 33-year-old a kiss at one stage.

There was also an exchange of words between the two players.

Watson would have been caught out during Riaz’s bowling spell, had Rahat Ali been able to hold on to the ball at deep-square leg.

An ICC statement, “Watson ignored the umpires’ instructions and verbally engaged with Wahab, who, at the end of the over, followed through towards the batsman and used aggressive and abusive language.”
