Dr Shakil Afridi’s lawyer gunned down in Peshawar

PESHAWAR: Samiullah Afridi, the lawyer of Dr Shakil Afridi, who helped the United States in tracking Al-Qaeda chief Osama bin Laden down, was killed in an attack by unknown armed men on GT Road, Peshawar.

Reports said that Afridi was on his way to home from his officer located on GT Road near Firdous Cinema, when his vehicle was ambushed by unknown armed attackers.

As a result, he was injured. He was rushed to Lady Reading Hospital, Peshawar, where he succumbed to his injuries during treatment.

It is to be mentioned here that Afridi was facing threats from militants for pleading Shakil Afridi’s case.

Earlier he had fled Pakistan after receiving threats from militants to US. He has recently returned from US after spending three months there.

He had gone to abroad after militants threatened to blow up his car and kill his family.

“Militants warned him to stop pleading the case or else he and his family would face the consequences,” a relative of Afridi said.

He represented Dr Shakil Afridi, who ran a fake vaccination campaign to try to help US officials find al Qaeda chief bin laden.

Afridi was arrested after US special forces killed bin Laden in May 2011 in the town of Abbottabad. The secret raid outraged Pakistan and strained relations between the allies.

Following the arrest, he was sentenced to 33 years in jail for membership of militant group Laskhar-e-Islam.
