Senate polls on FATA seats postponed for indefinite period

ISLAMABAD: Election Commission of Pakistan on Thursday postponed Senate elections on FATA seat for indefinite period, saying that new schedule for elections would be announced later.

Senate elections on FATA seat could not be held on Thursday as ECP suspended the process following some FATA MNAs and opposition parties raised objections over the late night promulgation of Presidential Ordinance changing the procedure for Senate elections on FATA seats.

After the objections, the Returning Officers in Islamabad’s Parliament House suspended the process and after extensive consultations, the ECP postponed the elections.

Meanwhile, some MNAs from FATA also moved to Islamabad High Court and Supreme Court against the Ordinance, pleading the court to declare the presidential decree as null and void.

The ordinance pertaining to the Senate elections from Fata withdraws the Statutory Regulatory Order of July 7, 1975, as well as a 2002 executive order — issued by former president Pervez Musharraf — which gave each tribal senator as many votes as the number of vacant seats.

Following the withdrawal of the two earlier orders, each Fata MNA will now only have one vote.
