Australia register World Cups’ largest win against Afghanistan

PERTH: Australia on Wednesday recorded World Cup’s largest win against Afghanistan on the back of David Warner’s 178 fiery ton in Perth.

The Kangaroos after setting a mammoth 417-6 target, bowled out the Asian minnows for just 142, registering the largest margin defeat in World Cup history.

Earlier, David Warner played a blistering 178 and Glean Maxwell made 88 to set up World Cup largest total of 417.

Afghanistan were bowled out 142 and lost by 275 runs – the largest margin of defeat in World Cups. Mitchell Johnson’s bouncers were unfriendly reminders to the batsmen that they were playing on one of the fastest pitch in the world. And it was Afghanistan’s first time at the WACA. Mitchell Starc hooped inswinging yorkers onto the base of the stumps and simply grinned. He knew better batsmen than Najibullah Zadran and Dawlat Zadran would have succumbed to that.

If facing up to fast bowlers that have left Full Members in disarray, the Australian fielding outfit put a big, bright spotlight on the gulf between the two teams. Warner flew to his right at backward point to stop a certain boundary in the ninth over. Aaron Finch, who’d nicked a beauty early on, returned the favour by taking a jaw-dropping catch at second slip. A freeze-frame would have had him about four feet in the air parallel with the ground. Smith judged a skier after running back to perfection, and it wasn’t even his catch.
