Social media giants likely to face anti-terror crackdowns in UK, US

LONDON: WhatsApp, Snapchat and other social networking services majorly based on encrypted communication likely to face ban in the United Kingdom and the United States of America following the meeting between US President Barack Obama and British PM David Cameron.

“David Cameron will tomorrow urge Barack Obama to force US-based web giants to do more to tackle terrorism,” Pakistan Tribe quoted Daily Mail report.

Tougher action is suggested by the British leader “to require the companies to alert authorities to suspicious online exchanges, ban encrypted communications and store data.”

Most of leaders think these platforms have been becoming safe heavens for terrorists, militants and extremists.

“British officials said Mr Cameron, due to begin his two-day visit to Washington today, would seek support for a crackdown on terrorists using social networks and other websites to communicate and foment hatred,” the site further said.

“British security sources say they often have ‘considerable difficulty’ in accessing online communications on sites belonging to US-based internet companies, such as Apple, Facebook, Google, Microsoft, Twitter and Yahoo. Some of these say they can’t cooperate because they ‘need to protect users’ privacy’.”
