Sindh recommends 27 terror cases to military courts

KARACHI: The Sindh High Court (SHC) forwarded 27 terrorism cases to the Sindh government to hold their trials in military courts, local media reported on Monday.

At least 27 cases related to terrorism during 2014 have been forwarded to the Sindh government to be tried in military courts.

The cases include suicide attack on Chaudhry Aslam (late), furious attack on judge Maqbool Baqar and life-threatening attack on Senior Superintendent Police (SSP) Farooq Awan, reports said.

According to SHC, details of the cases were sent to the Sindh government for scrutiny which later would be recommended to the federal government for their trials in military courts.

It should be mentioned here that Pakistan approved establishment of nine military courts ‘in first phase’ to hold trials of terrorism related cases, Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said on January 9.

Three military courts each in Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) provinces respectively while two in Sindh and one in Balochistan will be establishment during its first phase.

The specific date and terrorism cases are due to be announced as yet. However, ISPR clarified that the courts would be activated shortly to try the terrorists.

Earlier on January 8, the provincial information minister Sharjeel Memon announced that the Sindh government shortlisted major cases related to terrorism including incidents of Karachi airport, Mehran base and Karsaz attack which would be recommended to be tried in military courts.

Memon had also revealed that approximately 3,000 terrorism related cases were still pending primarily of extortion and target killing in Sindh province. He said that the cases will be recommended to federal government to refer it for trail in the military courts. He clarified the provincial governments were not authorities to refer directly the cases for trial courts.
