NEW YORK: The Palestinians will officially become member of the International Criminal Court (ICC) on April 1, the United Nations (UN) Secretary General Ban Ki-moon confirmed on Wednesday via press office.
On Friday the Palestinians delivered to UN headquarters documents on joining the Rome Statute of the ICC and other international treaties, in a move that has heightened tensions with Israel and could lead to cuts in US aid, Reuters reported.
UN released the official announcement, Ban Ki-moon’s letter, on its website declaring formal accession of Palestine as ICC member. The United Nations is the official depositary of the Rome Statute and many other treaties.
According to ICC rules, the court based in The Hague would be allowed to run jurisdiction without referral from the UN Security Council over war crimes committed by anyone on Palestinian territory under the membership
It is noteworthy to mention here that Israel, like the United States, is not a party to the Rome statute, but its citizens could be tried for actions taken on Palestinian land.
Palestinians signed the Rome Statute on December 31 just after failure of independence bid by 2017 at the UN Security Council.
