Chaudhry Nisar warns against misuse of anti-terror helpline 1717

ISLAMABAD: Pakistani Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar on Wednesday warned against misuage of special anti-terrorism helpline number 1717 as it was definitely not launched to complain domestic disputes.

Chaudhry Nisar revealed that security departments received only 15 to 20 effective calls to register terrorism cases while more than 500-600 complaints were found fake. He said that the helpline was being misused by the citizens as they were registering complains majorly of domestic fights between husband and wife.

He said that filing complaints on helpline 1717 was not joke and it should be taken serious.

The interior minister was addressing a press conference after chairing a high-level meeting held to discuss implementation of national strategy for security measures.

The meeting decided to end Toll Plazas situated at entrance/exit points of the federal capital Islamabad while special computerised cards will be issued for identification of vehicles and motorcycles.

Moreover, the district government has signed an agreement with National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) for issuance of smart cards capable to hold detailed information of citizens, he said.

Nisar said that the National Action Plan (NAP) was an effective move to root out terrorism from the country. He said that Pakistan was involved in anti-terrorism war since last 12 years and the nation should keep themselves alert against any terror bid. He said that the government has selected 1500 volunteers to counter terrorism bids.

He announced that the country will now speedily start implementation on executions against the death row prisoners and the government has shortlisted 47 death row prisoners. He further said that the implementation of death sentence on Shafqat Hussain was delayed in view of some legal complications. DNA test will be taken of the prisoner to determine his age, Nisar added.

The interior minister urged media departments to blacklist terrorists. He declared ‘independent media’ as a ‘prominent monitoring mechanism.’

Answering to a question, Nisar said that Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) and Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam Fazl (JUI-F) were standing with the national unity against terrorism. He said that JUI-F would remain in federal cabinet despite their severe concerns on the 21st Constitutional Amendment which was approved yesterday.

It is noteworthy to mention here that JI and JUI-F had not participated in the voting to approve 21st Constitutional Amendment to allow establishment of military courts in the country.

Questions for Imran Khan’s second marriage also placed during the meeting as a journalist inquired Chaudhry Nisar whether he congratulated the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chairman on his remarriage. Chaudhry Nisar said that he would definitely congratulate him if Imran delivers a formal announcement for his second marriage.
