Number of Israelis renouncing citizenship surges

TEL AVIV: Increasing numbers of Israelis living outside the country are renouncing their citizenship, says a report by an Israeli news website.

The report, based on data collected by the Administration of Border Crossings, Population, and Immigration and Israeli embassies abroad, found that the percentage of Israeli citizens giving up their passports had risen by 65 percent in 2014.

As many as 765 citizens submitted documents to renounce their nationality, and last year 478 Israelis renounced their country citizenship, according to the report.

Israel has approved 635 such applications so for, it said.

About their decision people cited employment reasons. They wanted to apply for sensitive posts in their countries. There are countries which prohibit employment of dual passport holders.

Those forwarding the requests often cited the reason that they had done so as they did not want to hold dual citizenship or because they sought another citizenship, requiring them to drop their Israeli one.

Others stated that the Israeli law regarding passport, which requires them to enter and depart Israel on their Israeli passports even if carrying a second passport, as another reason for wanting to renounce their citizenship.

Some explained that they simply do not see themselves returning to Israel.

Most of the requests, according to the data, indicated that the majority of the requests were received from Israelis living in Germany, the United States, Austria, the United Kingdom and the Netherlands.
