Earlier on Monday Islamabad High Court (IHC) declared the decision orders of government null and void regarding house detention of Zakiur Rehman Lakhvi and ordered for his release.

The Islamabad High Court judge, Justice Noorul Haq Qureshi conducted hearing of the petition filed by Zakiur Rehman Lakhvi seeking an end to his detention. The court ordered for release of Zakiur Rehman Lakhvi. The court has issued a two-page judgment on Lakhvi’s release.
It is pertinent to mention here that Lakhvi was granted post-arrest bail by an anti-terrorism court (ATC) in Islamabad on December 18.
However, the federal government had extended his detention in the Adiala Jail under the Maintenance of Public Order Ordinance.
On December 26, Lakhvi had challenged his detention in the Islamabad High Court.
During the Monday’s hearing, Lakhvi’s counsel Rizwan Abbasi said that the court had previously accepted his client’s bail, but it was the administration that had detained him which was unlawful. He said that granting of bail was an issue of fundamental rights.
After hearing the counsel’s arguments, the court ordered for release of Zakiur Rehman Lakhvi.
On December 19, Zakiur Rehman Lakhvi has been detained under the Maintenance of Public Order (MPO), a day after being granted bail by an anti-terrorism court.
The ATC had granted bail to Lakhavi on surety bonds of Rs 500,000. Arguments for Lakhvi were made by Advocate Rizwan Abbasi while the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) prosecutor Chaudhry Azhar made arguments against the accused being granted bail.
Zakiur Rehman Lakhvi was arrested in February 2009 and was indicted along with six others on 25 November 2008 for planning and helping to carry out the Mumbai attacks.
Lakhvi was believed to be the operational chief of the Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) which has been accused by India of carrying out the attacks in Mumbai.
Lakhvi is among the seven persons charged with planning and helping carry out the 2008 Mumbai attacks. The six other men facing trial in Adiala Jail for their alleged involvement in Mumbai attacks are Hammad Amin Sadiq, Shahid Jamil Riaz, Younas Anjum, Jamil Ahmed, Mazhar Iqbal and Abdul Majid.
