SHC suspends black warrants of two convicted LJ men

KARACHI: Sindh High Court (SHC) on Monday suspended the black warrant issued for execution of two condemned prisoners belonging to the banned Lashkar-i-Jhangvi.

An SHC bench headed by Justice Muhammed Ali Mazhar while suspending the black warrants, directed the provincial home department to adhere to the rules and procedure while carrying out execution of prisoners.

While disposing off the petition, the court cited a recent decision of full court wherein it was decided that no execution could take place before seven days of issuance of black warrants. The court opined that in the instant matter black warrant was issued on Dec 19 and the execution was planned for Dec 23 which is violation of the rules and procedure.

He directed that fresh process of issuance of back warrant should be initiated by observing the rules and regulations.

It is to be mentioned here that two condemned prisoners belonging to Lashkar-e-Jhangvi  Ataullah, alias Abdullah alias Qasim, and Muhammed Azam, alias Sharif had challenged the issuance of black warrants.

Their counsel told the judges that a review petition of the convicts was pending disposal before the Supreme Court that had earlier rejected their appeal against the conviction and upheld capital punishment handed down to them.
