CAIRO: A court in Egypt on Tuesday issued preliminary death sentences for 185 people over an attack on a police station last year.

The court  judge has sentenced 185 people to death over an attack on Kerdasa  police station on the outskirts of Cairo on 14 August 2013 in which police officers were killed.

The verdict is preliminary and subject to a lengthy appeals process. It also goes to the country’s top religious authority for approval although his opinion is not binding.

The attack on the Kerdasa police station killed  hundreds of people in one of the bloodiest episodes in the country’s modern history.
