Wife, daughter of IS chief ‘detained in Lebanon’

BEIRUT: A wife and daughter of Islamic State (IS) chief Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi has been arrested by the Lebanese army when they were crossing from Syria nine days ago, Reuters reported on Tuesday.

Security officials claimed that the army personnel arrested one of Baghdadi’s wives and daughters nine days ago. However, they rejected to provide name or nationality of the detainees.

The women were detained in northern Lebanon while both were shifted to the headquarters of the Lebanese defense ministry for further investigation, security officials said.

The army detained her in coordination with ‘foreign intelligence apparatus’, the Lebanese newspaper As-Safir reported.

The detainees were likely to be bargained with many foreign, Iraqi and Syrian prisoners captured by the jihadist group, reports said.

A senior Lebanese security official said Baghdadi’s wife had been traveling with one of their daughters, contradicting earlier reports that it was his son. DNA tests were conducted to verify it was Baghdadi’s child, the official said.

Despite the major blow to ‘declared caliph of Islamic State, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi’, no immediate reaction was seen on IS websites.
