CEC appointment: PM, Opposition leader could not reach on consensus

ISLAMABAD: Opposition Leader in the National Assembly Syed Khurshid Shah and Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif could not  reach on consensus for appointment of a permanent Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) in a meeting held on Monday.

Talking to media after the meet up, Shah said that they discussed as many as seven names for the appointment of CEC in the  meeting which continued for one hour and detailed discussion was held with the PM in Prime Minister’s House.

He said that  the meeting will be held again on Tuesday (tomorrow) for the purpose and they will decide the name of the CEC before end of Supreme Court of Pakistan (SC) deadline of December 5.

According to reports, during the meeting both the leaders discussed as many as seven names for appointment as permanent CEC. As per 18th amendment to the constitution, the Prime Minister and Opposition Leader are required to hold meaningful consultation for appointment of Chief Election Commissioner and members of the Election Commission of Pakistan.

But the Opposition Leader did not reveal the names to the media and said that the PM could take opposition parties into confidence over the names adding that the opposition parties have ensured that they will support the final name coming out of consenses.

The Supreme Court had given the government Dec 5 deadline to appoint a permanent CEC, otherwise it would withdraw its judge (Justice Anwar Zaheer Jamali) who is currently serving as Acting Chief Election Commissioner.
