3rd test: McCullum blitz helps New Zealand powerful response

SHARJAH: New Zealand skipper Brendon McCullum’s brilliant knock of 100 for 78 balls guided Kiwis powerful response to Pakistan first innings total of 351.

The Kiwis scored 164/1 at tea break with skipper McCullum  unbeaten at 100 and  Kane Williamson at 44.

McCullum blitz is the the fastest Test hundred for a New Zealander. He went past Ross Taylor’s mark of 81 deliveries, achieved against Australia in Hamilton in March 2010.

Earlier, New Zealand reduced Pakistan to 351 with off-spinner Mark Craig’s best figures of 7-94, his first five-wicket haul.

Pakistan lost their last seven wickets for the addition of 70 runs after resuming the day at 281-3.

Returning from injury, opener Mohammad Hafeez made his highest Test score of 197. His previous best, 196, was against Sri Lanka in Colombo.

The team members and officials from both nations observed a minute’s silence and wore black armbands to join the sporting world in mourning young Australian batsman Phillip Hughes, who died on Thursday after being struck by a bouncer.

The two teams abandoned the second day’s play in the third Test in Sharjah on Thursday as a mark of respect.

Pakistan lead the three-match series 1-0.
