Cricketers who died young

DUBAI: The death of Australian batsman Phillip Hughes on Thursday reminds of many a cricketer who died at young age. Here is a brief list of them.

Bangladesh’s Manjurul Islam Rana, about 23, played six Tests and 25 ODIs. He died in a road accident in 2007.

England’s Ben Hollioake, 24, died in  2002 in a highway accident in Australia. His girlfriend also received severe injuries,  but she survived the accident. Ben’s brother Adam also played for and captained England. Ben played two Tests and 20 ODIs.

Hansie Cronje, who captained South Africa for several years and was banned in 2000 for match-fixing, died in a plane crash soon afterwards.

West Indies’ Runako Morton, 33, who played 15 Tests, 56 ODIs, and seven T20Is,  died in 2012.

Laurie Williams, 33, died in a car accident in 2002. He played 15 ODIs for West Indies from 1996 to 2001.
