BISP chairman Enver Baig resigns

ISLAMABAD: Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP) Chairman Enver Baig on Tuesday resigned over alleged  hurdles being created by bureaucracy in smooth implementation of the BISP.

According to local media reports, Enver Baig submitted his resignation to Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif during a meeting before the PM’s departure to Nepal to attend Saarc summit in Kathmandu.

Sources that submitting his resignation, Baig complained to the prime minister that the bureaucracy was creating hurdles in implement ion of the BISP.

The BISP was initiated in October 2008 by the last PPP government with an initial allocation of Rs34 billion . The programme aims at covering almost 40 per cent of the population below the poverty line.

Baig was appointed its chairman last year in November by Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif.
