Federal Minister Zahid Hamid resigns following court order to include in high treason case as co-accused

ISLAMABAD: Federal Minister for Science and Technology Zahid Hamid on Friday resigned following the special court’s , which is trying former military dictator General Pervez Musharraf for high treason, directives to the government to include Hamid along with the then Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz and then Chief justice of Pakistan Abdul Hameed Dogar as co-accused in the case.

The minister’s resignation comes hours after after the special court announced its decision on an application moved by General Musharraf seeking court order to the government to include those who abetted him in proclamation of Nov 3, 2007 emergency plus.

Sources said that  the minister sent his resignation to the prime minister. The prime minister accepted the resignation, they added.

According to a private TV channel, the minister vacated his office after resignation. Talking to the channel, the former minister said that he could  not continue as minister following the court directive to include him in the high treason case as co-accused.

Earlier, the special court trying former military ruler Pervez Musharraf for treason directed the federal government to resubmit its complaint in the treason case after including the names of former prime minister Shaukat Aziz, federal minister Zahid Hamid who was law minister at the time and former chief justice Abdul Hameed Dogar to the charge-sheet.

One of the judges, Justice Yawar Ali of Lahore High Court, wrote a dissenting note.

The court’s decision can be challenged by the federal government if it chooses to. The decision is based on the original complaint filed by the federal government which had said that the role of other facilitators could be examined.
