Thar famine: Nine more infants die to push toll to 100

UMERKOT: Nine more infants died in the drought-hit Tharparkar district on Tuesday, pushing up the total tally to 100.

According to reports, six infants died in tehsil Chhachhro  with  three deaths in Hayat Halepoto village and as many  in village Alamsar.

While two children died at Civil Hospital in Mithi and another infant’s death was reported from tehsil Diplo, raising the total number of deaths on Tuesday to nine.

Doctors said that main cause of the deaths are malnutrition, besides pneumonia and diarrhoea.

The provincial government has been under harsh criticism for its failure to control the situation arising out of the drought-like condition prevailing in the desert district of the province.
