Seven more infants die in Thar of malnutrition pushing toll to 80

UMERKOT: The prevailing famine in desert district of Tharparker stoked by drought claimed  seven more infants, pushing up the death toll to 80 during last 47 days.

According to reports, some 14 people have died in Tharparkar during the last 24 hours.

A recent District Health Department Umerkot report said that 85 people have died in Umerkot out of which 61 are  be infants. The total death toll in 2014 in Tharparker is reported as 470.

The residents of more than 80 percent of desert district are dependent on rain-fed agriculture and livestock for their livelihood.

But for last two-and-half years, the prevailing drought conditions have stoked famine like situation leading to malnutrition in people especially infants and newborns.

The Sindh government has been under harsh criticism for its failure to control the situation in the areas caused by drought.
