PAT, Punjab govt hold talks to constitute JIT on Model Town incident

LAHORE:  Pakistan Awami Tehrik (PAT) and Punjab government on Thursday held talks for constitution of new Joint Investigation Team (JIT) with consensus to probe into the Model Town tragedy, local media reported.

Some 13 PAT workers were killed when on June 17, 2014 Punjab police carried out an anti-encroachment operation to remove barriers from outside the Model Town Secretariat Tehreek-e-Minhajul Quran.

An FIR of the incident was registered against top government officials including Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif, IG Punjab, federal and provincial ministers on Lahore High Court order.

During the meeting it was agreed to appoint the JIT head, who will be an additional IG, from outside Punjab, as was demanded by PAT chief Dr Tahirul Qadri. Four names have been proposed including Aftab Cheema, Shahid Hayat, Nasir Durani and Abdur Razak to be appointed one of them as head of the JIT.
