Thar deaths: Sharjeel Memon’s bid to defend the indefensible

KARACHI: Sindh Information Minister Sharjeel Memon on Monday came out with an strange logic to defend his government over criticism for children’s deaths in Tharparker due to famine, saying that daily 600 children die across the country but there is hue and cry over the deaths of just two children in Tharparker.

The minister also criticised media for critical coverage of Sindh government over Thar famine situation.

Talking to media prior to Sindh Assembly session, Memon said that Tharparker was the least developed and backward district of the province and the government was carrying out relief activities in the drought-hit district effectively and efficiently.

He said that in the first phase RO plants were being installed in the district so that supply of safe and clear drinking water to the residents could be ensured.

He said that Health Department had not been held by the Pakistan People’s Party nominee for the last 20 years. He questioned that why there was a hue and cry over the death of two children in Thar though over 600 children die daily across the country.

He rejected the reports that  Sindh Chief Minister might be changed. He further said that due to government measures, cases of kidnapping for ransom had come down in the province.
