Twelfth death anniversary of John Elia today

KARACHI: Today is the 12th death anniversary of renowned Urdu poet, philosopher and philologist John Elia.

Born into an educated family in Amroha, Uttar Pardesh, in 1931, Elia migrated to Pakistan in 1957 and settled in Karachi.

He tried his hand at various genres of poetry and made his mark in many of them. His treatment of romance was unique among the poets of his day.

He also had complete command over Arabic, Persian, and Hebrew. He was a highly skilled translator.

Since he was an egotist, he was disinclined to get his work published. The first of his poetry collection was published only after he had turned 57.

For his literary services, he got the Presidential Pride of Performance Award. He died on November 8, 2002, after a protracted illness.

His brothers Raees Amrohvi (poet and psychologist), Kamal Amrohvi (film maker) and Muhammad Taqi (philosopher) were also successful in their respective fields.
