Justice Baghwandas refuses to become Chief Election Commissioner

KARACHI: One of the favorite names emerged for the post of Chief Election Commissioner(CEC), former justice Rana Baghwandas, has refused to become CEC.

Senior Parliamentarian Mian Raza Rabbani of Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) on Saturday held a meeting with Baghwandas and tried to persuade him to become CEC, as most of the ruling and opposition parties are supporting him for the important job.

But the former judge of the apex court, who has the distinction of refusing to take oath of allegiance to the former military dictator General Musharrraf in 2007 under the Provisional Constitutional Order promulgated by the regime following imposition of a mini-martial law in the country, refused to accept Rabbani’s peal.

As the deadline set by Supreme Court of Pakistan for appointment of a permanent Chief Election Commissioner is nearing, the political parties, both ruling and opposition, have geared up efforts to evolve consensus on a name to be appointed as CEC. The Prime Minister and Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly have also met recently to hold the constitutionally-bound meaningful consultation for appointment on the most important post.

The growing hopes of a consensus on the name of Baghwandas by ruling and opposition parties were shattered on Saturday when Raza Rabbani failed to persuade the former judge of the apex court to  become the new CEC.

The man, with unblemished and impregnable integrity, has also been chairman Federal Public Service Commission, and there were some legal hitches in his appointment, though the government and opposition were more than ready to remove the hurdles through legislation.
