PM disqualification: Petitions to be decided as per constitution: SC

ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court on Wednesday made it clear that the petitions seeking disqualification of the Prime Minister would be decided in accordance with the constitution.

While hearing the petitions seeking the disqualification of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif for allegedly issuing a misstatement during a joint sitting of the Parliament, Justice Jawwad S Khwaja said that it was not court’s concern that the prime minister lost its seat as a result of its (court) decisions.

He said that the courts functioned in accordance with the Constitution and all decisions were taken accordingly.

He was heading a three-member bench comprising Justice Sarmad Jalal Osmany and Justice Mushir Alam, which heard the petitions filed by PTI leader IShaq Khakwani and PML-Q President  Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain.

Further hearing of the petition was adjourned till Nov 10.

The petitioners had requested the court to disqualify Prime Minister Sharif under Article 62-f of the Constitution, claiming he gave a false statement in the joint sitting of the Parliament over the role of the army in negotiations with Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf and Pakistan Awami Tehreek (PAT) to end their prevailing sit-ins.

The article deals with the qualifications required of a member in order to become a parliamentarian.
