ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf Chief Imran Khan on Wednesday held a one-on-one meeting with Jamaat-e-Islami Pakistan Amir Sirajul Haq to remove the misunderstandings due to the former public criticism of Haq, wherein he had asked him (Haq) to shun playing on both sides of the wicket.
Relations between the two parties, which are coalition partners in provincial government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, strained following Imran Khan public criticism of JI chief. The Wednesday meeting is viewed a bid by PTI chief to improve the strained relations.
Addressing a crowded press conference after the meeting along with JI chief, Imran Khan said that he had given a proposal for resolving the prevailing standoff to Sirajul Haq. He said that the PTI sit-in would continue till justice was dispensed with.
Though he did not elaborate the proposal in details, he hinted that investigation into the alleged rigging can be carried out by a Supreme Court nominated commission. He alleged that the government was protecting those responsible for the rigging in last elections.
Sirajul Haq said that during the meeting they discussed the prevailing political situation and relations between the two countries.
He said that though the two parties were independent to take any decision, both had similar views on many national issues. He said that both the parties were struggling to end status quo.
He sad that like PTI, JI had also reservations over the transparency of last general elections and was of the view that those responsible for the rigging and malpractices should be punished. “JI also wants elections reforms and is of the considered opinion that if any elections were held without reforms, the same complaints would emerge,” he added.
He criticised the government for using delaying tactics to resolve the impasse through negotiation.
Imran was accompanied by Khyber Pakhtunkhwa chief minister Pervez Khattak, Speaker KP Assembly Assad Qaiser, Dr Arif Alvi and others. The PTI team went to the Islamabad residence of former JI MNA Mian Aslam .
The meeting is viewed as a bid to remove the misunderstandings and improve relations between the two allies in KP, which strained after Imran public outburst against Sirajul Haq.
A newspapers (Dawn) carried out a news report, wherein it attributed a statement to JI chief saying “The PML-N and PTI are two sides of a single coin.” Though the newspaper withdrew its report and apologized for misreporting, Imran lashed out at Sirajul Haq for what he said playing on both sides of the wicket. He had asked Sirajul Haq to make it clear whether the JI was with PML-N or PTI
