400 die of stroke daily in Pakistan: Dr Wasey Shakir

Karachi: Pakistan is facing an epidemic of stroke due to unhealthy and sedentary lifestyle, as at least 1000 persons having strokes daily, of which 400 die due to the paralyzing disease and its complications.

This was stated by renowned neurologist and President of Pakistan Society of Neurology Dr. Muhammad Wasey Shakir while speaking at a seminar in connection with World Stroke at Karachi Press Club (KPC) on Tuesday.

The seminar and health screening camp at KPC was organized by the Health Committee of KPC in collaboration with Pakistan Stroke Society and a local pharmaceutical company.

World Stroke Day will be observed on Wednesday, October 29 all over the world and experts would be highlighting the dangers of stroke, factors causing the disease and healthy practices for people to prevent themselves from the paralyzing disease.

At the health screening camp, working journalists and their family members were provided facilities of free health screening and their blood pressure, blood sugar level and cholesterol were checked on the spot.

Dr. Wasey said that in Pakistan women were more at the risk of having strokes as compared to men. He underlined the need of awareness among women about the disease and ways and practices to prevent themselves from the paralyzing disease.

He said unhealthy lifestyle, lack of regular exercise, excessive intake of table salt and diabetes were some of the major causes of stroke and added that smoking in men was another reason that causes heart problem as well as stroke.

The renowned neurologist said hypertension or high blood pressure, diabetes, and high cholesterol levels in addition to getting overweight were some of the indicators that a person could get either heart attack or stroke.

“People should adopt the practice of doing daily exercise, smokers should quit smoking and other oral use of tobacco, reduce intake of sodium chloride or table salt to prevent themselves from getting stroke, which if not kills instantly, can paralyze a person for several years”, he maintained.

Secretary Karachi Press Club (KPC) Amir Latif, Secretary KPC Health Committee Hamid ur Rehman and other also spoke on the occasion.
