SHO Brigade accused of forming ‘cop gang’ involved in kidnapping for ransom

KARACHI:  Though kidnappings for ransom have registered alarming rise in Karachi, but of late it has emerged that some cops of Karachi police have formed organised ‘gangs’, who picked up citizens and detained them illegally in police lock-ups for a day or two demanding from them to pay certain amount, otherwise they would be booked in cases of kidnapping, dacoity or other crimes of heinous nature.

In Karachi, the biggest metropolis and financial hub of the country, several armed gangs including dacoits, robbers, car lifters, gangsters, militant wings of political parties and Taliban are active, besides the gangs involved in kidnapping for ransom.

But recently it emerged that some black-sheep of Karachi police have formed gangs comprising police officials, who kidnapped people and locked them up in police station illegally without any charges and demanded them to pay certain amount for their release. Sources claimed that these black-sheep threatened their ‘preys’ to implicate them in dacoity, kidnapping or extortion cases if they did not meet their demand, which compelled the ‘abductees’ to pay the ‘ransom’ being demanded the cops to get them freed.

On Friday, some eights policemen including a lady constable from Brigade Police Station, who were being headed by an Assistant Sub-Inspector, ‘raided’ houses in Lines Area and picked up three teenagers and locked them up at the PS. The three teenagers, among them two are minors, were subjected to torture throughout the night and in the morning, their family members were asked to pay 20 thousands each, otherwise they will be booked in a dacoity case.

They were all from humble background and their families were unable to pay Rs 20 thousands which later was settled at Rs10 thousands each.

One of the ‘abductees’ is Muhammad Raza, who is a school student and worked as a part-time office boy at a legal firm. His father works at Cant Station as a porter in the day and a security guard in the night. As the family is very poor, his school expenses are born by the owner of the firm, Farrukh Usman Advocate.

Even the ‘ransom’ was paid by the lawyer when police refused to free him without gratification.

Farukh approached police to lodge an FIR against the cops involved in the ‘kidnapping for ransom’ which was not entertained. Later, he filed an application in Additional District and Session Judge East Shahid Pervez Memon for registration of an FIR on kidnapping for ransom charges against the cops.

While accepting the application for hearing, the court issued notice to Additional IG Karachi and DSP Brigade Police Station.

Sources said that the SHO Brigade was involved as he has constituted a ‘gang’ to ‘kidnap’ people and extorts money from them.
