Have you ever imagined that a company like Nokia may vanish from the smartphone market? Well, it’s just happened as software giant Microsoft has dumped Nokia. It might be very disappointing to a lot of people, but there are also a large number of people who will celebrate this.
This is a big shock to the smartphone market. For a long time, Nokia dominated the smartphone world. It contributed handsomely to it by introducing new technology as well as generating record revenue.
Nokia Lumia is the leading Windows device maker in the world currently but it won’t continue for long now as Microsoft, Nokia, and regulatory authorities get to work on finalizing the $7.3 billion deal that will see Microsoft buy Nokia’s devices and services division.
Nokia sold smartphone business to Microsoft but will still manufacture the device for the company —with a different name.
Nokia introduced first Lumia device back in November 2011 which turned out to be the block buster surprise for the smartphone market running Windows 8. The Lumia device so far has been ruling Windows phone market.
Nokia holds the record of having introduced 41 megapixel cameras. Yeah, that’s right. First Nokia used the lens in Nokia 808 PureView which runs company’s iconic Symbian software. Then came in 2013 Nokia Lumia 1020 which still dominates as far as cameras are concerned.
From 1998 to 2012, Nokia was the largest vendor of mobile phones in the world, which included early smartphones built on its Symbian platform. However, in recent years, its market share declined as a result of the growing use of touchscreen smartphones from other vendors such as Apple’s iPhone line and Android-based products.
Nokia’s most popular windows set is Lumia 520 which is not only the best device of windowsplatform but also affordable because of its price.
Nokia also made its name in phablet market with iconic first and only windows phablet Nokia Lumia 1520.
The company got these achievements from 2011 to 2014. But there is another face of the company which began in 1988 and continued till 2014.
The 1011 was released in 1992. It was Nokia’s first set to run on a GSM network. The device is also the first modern device from Nokia. Nokia 8110 was the first business-oriented device which debuted in 1996. Three years later, it featured heavily in the 1999 movie The Matrix.
In 1996 Nokia also introduced Communicator 9000 with full QWERTY keyboard a 24MHz processor, and a giant 4.5-inch display, the dream smartphone for a businessman.
It might be the most successful and the game changing devices ever made. The Nokia 3310 and 3210 were a perfect balance between desirability and affordability, and Nokia went on to sell over 125 million sets worldwide.
Nokia was the first company to introduce camera in smartphone. The Nokia 7650 has this crown, to be the first smartphone to feature camera and also the first device to run a Symbian operating system.
The Nokia 6800 is one of many examples of Nokia throwing a curveball. A candybar handset that unfolded to reveal a full QWERTY keyboard, the “butterfly phone”.
The 2003 Nokia 7600 doesn’t represent a massive milestone for the company — although it was one of the first 3G phones from the company. Nokia made first attempt at a touch screen device in 2004 by introducing the 7710; the strange shape and lack of a keypad confused many; and the device failed to gain traction.
The Nokia N93, released in July 2006, is one of Nokia’s many experimental form factors. With a Carl Zeiss lens, the N93 was marketed as an all-in-one smartphone and camcorder. A year later Nokia introduced the iPhone killer, Nokia N95, which took the company up to the next level.
If the N95 and N97 were the answers to the iPhone, the E71 was unmistakably an attempt to defeat BlackBerry. Praised for its high quality, the E71 was let down by the then-aging Symbian OS. The Nokia N9 was the company’s brave new hope in the fight against Android and iOS. It introduced the now-familiar Nokia Lumia polycarbonate shell, but rather than Windows Phone, ran the MeeGoHarmattan OS.
The last Symbian phone was the first PureView phone. It is still the owner of the record for “largest sensor in a phone.”
Despite Microsoft owning Nokia now, the company will never be forgotten in the smartphone world due to its remarkable contribution. Nokia fans will miss Nokia’s name on high-end handsets but the company has done a lot for the fans.
