Pakistan resorts to ‘Sweets’ diplomacy to defuse tension with India

NEW DELHI – Despite tension at Indo-Pakistan borders and frequent exchange of firing by the armed forces of both the countries, Pakistan has sent ‘Diwali sweets’ to Indian President Pranab Mukherjee and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, media reported.

Pakistan High Commissioner to India Abdul Basit also sent Diwali sweets to Minister for External Affairs Sushma Swaraj.

Sources said that the initiative seemed to have been taken at the High Commission’s level.

Significantly, Indian forces have not offered sweets to their Pakistani counterparts on Diwali in the wake of ceasefire violations along the Line of Control and the Working Boundary.

India’s Border Security Force (BSF) in Punjab and Indian-held Jammu Kashmir did not exchange sweets and greetings, a goodwill gesture carried out during major occasions, especially festivals like Eid and Diwali.
