Former chief JI Bangladesh Gulam Azam aged 92

DHAKA: Former Jamaat-e-Islami Bangladesh chief Ghulam Azam died at the age of 92 in Bangabandu Sheikh Mujib Medical University Hospital in Dhaka.

Director of the hospital Brigadier General Abdul Majid said Gulam Azam died due to heart attack at 10: 10 pm yesterday (Thursday).

Earlier, His son Abdullah Mamoon Azmi and two other doctors confirmed his death.

The leader was serving 90-year prison sentence handed by the International Crimes Tribunal.

He faced more than 60 counts of crimes against humanity for his role in setting up militia groups that carried out atrocities during the 1971 war.

Several other senior Jamaat-e-Islami figures were investigated and convicted by the tribunal, which legal and human rights organizations have accused of being flawed.
