Fazlur Rehman escapes suicide attack in Quetta

QUETTA: At least three people were killed and over 30 others injured when a suspected suicide bombers hit the JUI-F chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman’s convoy outside his party’s public meeting venue at Quetta’s Sadiq Saheed ground. 

Police said that the JUI-F chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman remained unhurt in the attack, which, according to a JUI-F spokesman, targeted his vehicle.

Eyewitnesses said the blast took place when Maulana Fazal was leaving the ground  immediately after the rally.

Talking to a a private TV channel, the JUI-F chief said that the blast targeted his vehicle when was leaving the venue of the rally. He said that he and his colleagues survived the attack as they were riding in a bomb-proof vehicle.

Soon after the blast, rescue officials and security personnel rushed to the site of the blast and cordoned off the area.

The bodies and injured were shifted to  Civil Hospital Quetta for treatment. The condition of 10 of the injured is stated to be critical. This was third life attempt on the JUI-F chief.

The blast on Thursday was the third incident of terrorism of the day in Quetta, the capital of Balochistan province which is plagued by a nationalist insurgency and extremist militancy.

Earlier today, militants gunned down eight members of the ethnic Hazara community in Hazar Ganji area of the city.

At least two other people were also killed in a separate gun-and-bomb attack on security forces near Qambrani road earlier in the day.
