4-Days School

I cannot forget the concluding moments of my 2 days long “Teens Leadership Camp” at Khanaspur this summer. I heard a participant saying, “In these two days I have learnt which I did not learn in my 10 years of education in school”.

For a moment, I thought he might be exaggerating but suddenly my mind took me back to Markhor 2013. I started recalling what actually happened at Markhor. I started pondering upon what is the difference between Markhor and 10 years of traditional education system in our country? What role our schools are supposed to play? What is the main purpose of having so many schools and what methodology they use to teach students? These questions started hitting my mind.

When we have a close look at our traditional school system, we realize that they are just providing information in terms of how to read and write. Students with good reading and writing skills get awarded with top positions. Others just get passed with low self image.

The basic knowledge of how to live life is missing in our education system. The focus of students is merely to get promoted to next class with good results rather than learning skills that are required in different walks of life. But eventually these students take major roles in society and act as employee, employer, spouse, parent etc. When we don’t teach them how to live life, they end up living an ineffective and disturbed life. These skills which are mandatory for an effective life should be part of curriculum.

On the other end, when we observe Markhor, its design is the answer. We don’t provide information at Markhor, rather we create and provide experiences in which participants learn skills necessary to live a successful life. At Markhor, the first thing which participants learn is coming out of their comfort zones and stretching their physical, mental and social limits. Hiking and trekking forces them to rethink about their physical strengths, camping in the wild teaches them about the importance of resources they get to enjoy every day but never realize. Living the days with fewer resources, sharing food and tents with their team members encourage them to appreciate life in which they depend upon each other to create a long lasting impact on their lives and communities.

Markhor conference in wilderness is just one of the experiences where participants do not have to sit in conference room for long hours. Living in jungle for 4 days with individuals who belong to different ethnic groups, sects, social classes and experienced mentors, one can only imagine a “Success Mix”. Markhor- is the platform, which focuses on learning leadership by experiencing it. Making new friends while striving to survive and planning for next move to catch success, it’s all about what you are eager to internalize.

Markhor is not an alternative to schooling system education, it’s the value addition which our younger generation needs to climb success ladder. Let’s develop a generation which becomes a role model for the world to get inspiration from. A generation, which is strong enough to challenge status- quo and to bring new social ideas to establish a society of peace, prosperity and progress.
