KARACHI: The spread of polio virus in the country has intensified as 11 cases were confirmed in just one day in the tribal areas.
According to the National Institute for Health (NIH), as many as 138 children have been affected by the virus and developed the disability.
The 11 cases were recorded in Peshawar and Federally Administered Tribal areas (FATA) on Saturday, NIH stated.
As many as 102 children have been confirmed as victim of polio virus in FATA so far this year, while 23 cases have been reported in KP, 11 in Sindh and one case each in Punjab and Baluchistan.
This year so far, 138 cases of the virus have been confirmed in the country; FATA is on top with 102 victims.
In FATA, 64 cases have been reported in North Waziristan, 25 in Khyber Agency, 11 in South Waziristan, and two in Bannu.
The NIH said the virus is spreading rapidly in the border areas of FATA and KP. Because of the poor security situation in these areas anti-polio vaccination drives have been suspended for most part of this year.
