Nawaz Sharif wins ‘popularity’ over Imran Khan: PEW survey

A latest survey report released by the Pew Research Centre revealed that the ongoing Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif belonging to Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PML-N) is still having significant public support as compare to political competitors including chiefs of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chief Imran Khan and Pakistan Awami Tehreek (PAT) amid strong anti-government protests.


The researchers found PM Nawaz Sharif on top as the latest public opinion favoured him 64 per cent after reduction of 2% as he got 66% popularity level amongst Pakistanis before the May 2013 elections.

Meanwhile, 32 per cent public opinion went against the ongoing Pakistani premier, survey stated.

Popularity level of PTI chief Imran Khan:

Imran Khan gained public favour of 53 per cent after reduction of 17% after 2013’s general election of Pakistan while 24 per cent reviews went against him.

Besides the interesting statistics amid hot political weather in Pakistan, PEW also stated that only 25% amongst the 1,203 respondents, who were interviewed face-to-face from April 15 to May 7, 2014 and majorly covers 82% of the country’s adult population, expressed satisfaction with the ongoing situations in the country.

The figure is more than 8% as compare to those who expressed their thoughts in 2013.

Those who were optimistic about the economy have more than doubled since last year, rising from 17% to 37%. And 36% expect the economy to improve further in the next 12 months, Express Tribune quoted PEW survey report.

Pakistan, which has seen four military led governments, 87% of the respondents believe that the army is having a good influence on the nation after seeing four military led governments while the figure rises from 79% near the May 2013 elections.

8 per cent respondents expressed support for Taliban while 12% said ‘Yes’ for Al-Qaeda.

Anti-India and Anti-US opinions:

51 per cent Pakistanis declared India as biggest enemy, while roughly seven-in-ten 71% gave an unfavorable view of India and 13% provided positive rating.

14 per cent Pakistanis favour US while 7% have confidence over President Barack Obama.
