Sony to unveil 6.1-inch mid-range phablet at IFA 2014?

WASHINGTON: Japanese technological giant Sony once again eyeing to join phablet category with its upcoming midrange 6.1 inch phablet.

As new report recons that the company is apparently gearing up to unveil a new 6.1-inch handset at the upcoming IFA 2014 trade show in September.

A new Sony phablet has been spotted with multiple model numbers, such as D2202, D2212, and D2203. It would seem, however, that this upcoming device will come in the entry-level segment of the market, falling somewhere between the Xperia E1 and Xperia M2 in terms of specifications.

The folks over at the Xperia Blog have stumbled upon the Sony D223 model on GFXBench, and the listing reveals details on the handset’s specs and features.

The phablet will apparently come with a 6.1-inch display and a rather disappointing FWVGA resolution, i.e. 854 x 480 pixels.

The device will pack a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 processor clocked at 1.2GHz, paired with a decent 1GB of RAM and 4GB of internal storage capacity.

The upcoming phablet will also sport a 5-megapixel rear camera, which appears to have QHD (2K) video recording capabilities, but that’s most likely an error. A VGA front shooter will allow for video chats and self-shots, while Android 4.4.2 KitKat will rock the software side. Connectivity options include Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and NFC, with no mention of 4G LTE support.

These modest specifications indicate that the D2203 will launch as a low-end phablet, which will most likely make its retail debut in Asia as a cheap Android device.

Sony is also expected to launch a new-generation smartwatch at the IFA 2014 trade show in Berlin this September, as well as a few other devices. With nothing officially confirmed so far, however, it is highly advisable to take all leaks, rumors and reports with a grain of salt for now. The IFA 2014 is just around the corner, so we’ll soon know all there is to know about Sony’s new line of devices straight from the source. We’ll keep you up to date as soon as we learn more, so stay tuned.
